Scare "Quotes"

There are very few things that I "hate" in life. Parking garages. Poachers. Carrot "cake."

Add one more to the list: "scare quotes."

Scare quotes are when you put quotation marks around a "word" to make it sound sarcastic or untrue. For example: The Obama administration's fiscal "stimulus" failed because it did not provide sufficient "demand." That makes it look like the stimulus was not a stimulus and demand is a fiction. It's "dumb" and sloppy!

The "Wall Street" Journal editorial page uses scare quotes constantly. I "hate" them.

That's all.

  1. What's not to like about carrot cake? It's cake that you can convince yourself is healthy. Plus it comes with cream cheese icing and/or a little marzipan carrot on top. MMMMM.
